Nedlands (Oral Health Centre)

In 1854, Colonel John Bruce, brought land in this area for his son Edward. It became known as "Ned's Land".
Oral history records that Noongar wells tapped freshwater near the Nedlands foreshore.

All of our dentistry courses are run from the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia (OHCWA).

The centre is an alliance between ​North Metropolitan TAFE, the University of Western Australia and Curtin University and is part of the University of WA site.

It provides state-of-the-art training equipment, facilities and expertise in the field of dentistry, giving our students hands-on experience in a modern simulated dental surgery setting.

Certificate III in Dental Assisting

Learn alongside dentists, oral health therapists and dental technicians in training

This course will give you real industry experience in a modern dental care facility.

If you’ve ever thought about being a part of this essential profession then this is the perfect qualification to get you started.

As a Dental Assistant, you will be responsible for preparing the surgery, assisting the dentist chairside, processing and sterilising all of the instruments and cleaning the surgery. You will also develop skills in reception work and the management of supplies.

Our dental assisting qualification provides you with skills that are relevant to current industry trends and practices.

North Metropolitan TAFE's Dental Assisting courses are located in the Oral Health Centre of WA (OHCWA) at Nedlands. This is also the training centre for dentists, oral health therapists and dental technicians.

As a part of this qualification, you will have the opportunity to take part in work placements at other dental organisations or at the OHCWA, giving you real experience in the industry in a modern dental care facility.

Employer-based delivery (part-time)
If you are a Dental Assistant currently working chairside in a surgery you may be able to complete this course by studying part-time, attending classes one day per week and incorporating workplace assessments. The part-time option is run each semester and interested applicants need not apply online, but can email an expression of interest to Leederville@nmtafe.wa.edu.au. Please note All continuous and part-time students may be required to attend lectures one day per week at another North Metropolitan TAFE campus.

The Certificate IV in Dental Assisting is ideal for qualified dental assistants who are looking to upskill, diversify, and be able to further assist the dentist within the dental practice.

On successful completion, this course will give you specialist skills and knowledge to construct and fabricate dental models and trays, take clinical photographs and produce radiographic images.

Train alongside dental students, oral health professionals and dental assistants in a simulated dental laboratory at the state of the art Oral Health Centre of WA

This course will prepare you to work as a laboratory assistant. You'll gain the skills to assist dentists and dental technicians to construct, repair and adjust dental appliances.

Does a career in the Dental Technology Industry make you smile?

When you complete the Certificate III in Dental Laboratory Assisting you will be ready to start a career in the busy dental technology world, as a laboratory assistant helping dentists and dental technicians to construct, repair and adjust dental appliances.

You will gain the career enhancing knowledge and skills to work as a member of the dental laboratory team. The skills that you develop in this course you can transfer into the HLT55115 Diploma of Dental Technology as an apprentice in a dental laboratory.

The Certificate III in Dental Laboratory Assisting includes supervised work skills in a simulated dental laboratory at the state of the art Oral Health Centre of WA. You will get to train in the same facility as dental students, oral health professionals and dental assistants.

The perfect qualification to get you started in the Dental Technology profession

This apprenticeship will give you the skills to prepare work for dental surgeries and produce dental appliances such as bridges and splints.

As a Dental Technician, you will be responsible for preparing work for dental surgeries and producing dental appliances such as bridges and splints.

Our dental technology qualification provides you with skills that are relevant to current industry trends and practices.

This qualification is an apprenticeship so you will need be employed as an apprentice in a Dental Laboratory and during the course you will have the opportunity to meet other apprentices when attending the Oral Health Centre TAFE facility for some theory sessions. We are located in the modern facility at the Oral Health Centre of WA in Nedlands. This is also the training centre for dentists, oral health therapists and dental laboratory assistants.
