In 1854, Colonel John Bruce, brought land in this area for his son Edward. It became known as "Ned's Land".
Oral history records that Noongar wells tapped freshwater near the Nedlands foreshore.
All of our dentistry courses are run from the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia (OHCWA).
The centre is an alliance between North Metropolitan TAFE, the University of Western Australia and Curtin University and is part of the University of WA site.
It provides state-of-the-art training equipment, facilities and expertise in the field of dentistry, giving our students hands-on experience in a modern simulated dental surgery setting.
North Metropolitan TAFE is committed to ensuring that people with disability have equal access to our services, programs and facilities so that you can achieve your educational and career goals.
Accessibility and Learning Support coordinators coordinate and implement support for students with a diagnosed disability, medical condition or mental health condition, whether temporary or permanent.
This service is free, confidential, and optional.
Accessibility and Learning Support can assist students with:
- Assistance with the enrolment process
- Familiarising you with the campus, facilities and classrooms
- Working with you to inform lecturers about your needs (if required)
- Alternative formats for learning materials (audio, large print, etc.)
- Adaptive technologies, software and specialised equipment
- Assessment alternatives and adjustments
- Study assistance, support and advocacy.

Certificate III in Dental Assisting
Learn alongside dentists, oral health therapists and dental technicians in training
This course will give you real industry experience in a modern dental care facility.
If you’ve ever thought about being a part of this essential profession then this is the perfect qualification to get you started.
As a Dental Assistant, you will be responsible for preparing the surgery, assisting the dentist chairside, processing and sterilising all of the instruments and cleaning the surgery. You will also develop skills in reception work and the management of supplies.
On successful completion of your Certificate III in Dental Assisting, you will have skills and experience relevant to current industry standards, trends and practices.
From semester 2, 2023, North Metropolitan TAFE's Dental courses are located within our newly fitted out dental department at our conveniently located Leederville campus.
As a part of this qualification, you will have the opportunity to take part in work placements at private dental practices, other dental organisations or at the OHCWA, giving you real experience in the industry in both privately run and government facilities.
Employer-based delivery (part-time)
If you are a Dental Assistant currently working chairside in a dental surgery, you may be able to complete this course by studying part-time, attending classes one day per week and incorporating workplace assessments. You will need the support of your employer to be eligible.
