The best photographers in Australia come from the West

North Metropolitan TAFE has been awarded the 2017 AIPP Australian Tertiary Institution of the Year by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP).

Established in 1976 and open to photographers from Australia and overseas, the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) rewards and recognises image making across all disciplines.

Final results for the Best Tertiary Institution Award were based on the quality of works presented by six North Metropolitan TAFE students.

“This Award speaks volumes of the extraordinary talent our students have,” said North Metropolitan TAFE Media Director Lawry Hill. “This is a major achievement and a great honour for the college. Our students are indeed some of the best in Australia.”

“It also highlights the passion, commitment and enthusiasm of our photography staff who work tirelessly to educate our students and promote their achievements.”

Mr Hill’s feelings were echoed by AIPP WA President Steve Wise. He highlighted the strong ties between North Metropolitan TAFE and the AIPP, which gives students great networking, experience and exposure opportunities.

“What most people don’t realise is that the judges are not given information on which works come from students and which works come from professionals when doing the selection; they are all judged based on the same standards,” he said.

“There are a lot of people doing photography at the moment - it is a really broad and competitive field. These students are standing out in the professional arena; some even scoring higher than the pros.”

Advanced Diploma of Photography student Lewis Conte was one of the three finalists for the 2017 AIPP Australian Student of the Year Award. After working as a carpenter for five years, he decided to attend North Metropolitan TAFE to turn his passion for photography into a career pathway.

“One of the highlights of this course for me was the professionals I met,” Lewis said. “When you are studying in a creative industry, you think you are all by yourself. But here I found a really supportive environment, and a real community in Western Australia.”

Lewis’ national achievement follows the success of another North Metropolitan TAFE student, Karen McGlue, who was recently awarded the 2017 AIPP WA Student Photographer of the Year.

Other students in North Metropolitan TAFE’s winning team are Huu Nguyen, Rebecca DeVries, Jessica Pfluger and Anca Beijinaru.
